Annie Get Your Gun

This very popular musical about sharpshooting naïve tomboy Annie Oakley who joins Buffalo Bill’s travelling show is absolutely packed full of Irving Berlin’s hit songs like Anything You Can Do, The Girl That I Marry and Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly”.

Irene

Chicago

Kander and Ebb, the team behind Cabaret,scored another hit with Chicago in 1975. It’s a wry, satirical tale of the prohibition era and particularly of the system that enables the cult of the “celebrity” criminal. It’s the second longest-running Broadway musical of all time, and the award-winning film version was released in 2002.

The Society’s production of Chicago took place in 1983. The musical is packed with hit songs, including All That Jazz, Razzle Dazzle, Nowadays and Mr Cellophane.

Applause

photo of applause sheet musicApplause, performed by the Society in 1984, is based on the film All About Eve (Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe). It tells the story of Margo Channing, a mature actress and star who takes a much younger actress, Eve, under her wing. Margo’s unaware that Eve is a schemer, planning to take not only her work but also her man.

Wild Violets

Photo of Wild Violets sheet musicIn 1960 and again in 1982, the Society put on a production of Wild Violets. This operetta tells of the reminiscences of the past triggered by a school reunion. Most of the story is told in flashback as it tells of a trio of friends and how one of them, Paul, met his future wife, Mary.  Naturally, the tale includes various shenanigans and assumed identities!
